The Ultimate Guide to 99 Walks

We know. It sounds crazy. The idea that simply lacing up your sneakers and walking out your door can have a profound impact on your mind, your mood and your body. But it’s true. 

Since 2019, thousands of women of all ages, shapes and sizes have discovered the benefits of a consistent walking practice. As 99 Walks Pack Members, they are managing their stress, increasing their energy, setting — and crushing — goals and rocking their inspirational bracelets. Some are even using their walking practice to help fuel weight loss and transformation.

Whatever your goals, we want to be sure that you get the most you possibly can out of your 99 Walks membership. So we’ve created this guide that we hope will answer all of your questions and give you all of the tools you need to begin walking your way to better. Why Is It Called 99 Walks?

Sure, we’ve got 99 Core Values. Yup, we celebrate our Pack Members’ 99th walk. And, okay, we once read that spotting the number 99 means it is time to get to work on your life’s purpose and mission. So why are we called 99 Walks? Well, that’s a bit more complicated … and a bit simpler.

The 99 Walks App

Once you have the app downloaded, take advantage of all the features available.

  1. Set Your Monthly Goal: Your walking goal is always the amount of miles you'd like to crush in that month. Your walking goal starts from the day you join through the end of the month, so if you join on the 12th of the month you'll set a goal for how many miles you can crush in the 18 (or so) days remaining in that month. Yes, your goal will be smaller than the goal of someone who started on the 1st, but that's ok! Your goal is your goal and should be challenging and doable for you to hit in whatever time is left in the month.

    Not sure where to begin? How about starting with a goal of 1 mile a day, so if today is the 15th, you'll set a goal to walk 15 miles between now and the end of this month. For more guidance, click here to read How to Set a Goldilocks Goal.

  2. Track Your Intentional Walks: Around here, we are pretty big on tracking “walks” and not “steps” during our day. Yes, there is value in tracking your steps, but there is MORE value in making the time to take what we call “intentional walks.” There are physical and mental benefits that far exceed the benefits from simply increasing your steps during the course of a day.   3. Take a Class: We offer many different styles of classes, each one designed to help you get up and get going with easy instructions, simple exercises, and music to get your blood pumping. New classes are uploaded to the app every day! 

    • Members can listen to our classes directly on the app. 

    • Our classes are not live and can be taken at your leisure.

    • There are classes for all fitness levels and include house walking and treadmill classes for those days you can’t get outside as well as meditation classes for days you need more relaxation and reflection.

    • Mark your favorite classes by tapping the heart on the class image so you can easily find it again.

    • Select your favorite genre of music to listen to during the class to tailor your experience to your preferences! Just click the radio icon in the top right corner of the classes tab to select your music preference.

  4. Join a Team: A team in 99 Walks is your crew. Your posse. Your pack within a pack. It is a small group of women with whom to share your goals and who promise to support you in your quest to crush them. Once you’re in a team, you can encourage one another through team and individual messages, commenting on and liking each other’s walks, So, how do you join one?

    1. Option 1: You can always bring or form your own team. 

    2. Option 2: You can connect with other Pack Members via our Facebook group to create a new team or join an existing team. 

    3. Option 3: You can join any of the OPEN teams listed within the app. There is no PIN required. Simply click “join” and you’re in! These are teams open to all Pack Members and are a fun way to get you connected right away with other Pack Members for additional support and motivation.

  5. Listen to a Podcast: We have two awesome formats to entertain and inform you while you’re out on a walk. 

    • Walk + Talks: Obviously we love walking. But did you also know we love talking? So when we get to combine the two, it gets us pretty excited.  And, did we mention that we don’t talk to just anybody? We talk to some of the most amazing people who are the leaders in the health & fitness field, magazine editors, TV personalities, authors and so much more. Yup, we’re talking to them and you get to walk with us while it happens. 

    Walk & Talks happen weekly and are announced to our members in our Facebook group and in the Daily Walk emails. They are always recorded so you can listen in later if you can’t join us live.

    Weekly Walk: Our CEO and Leader of the Pack, Joyce Shulman, is a recovering lawyer, entrepreneur, mom, adventurer, crossfitter, and lover of dark chocolate. She’s here to share her thoughts and ideas, often with her husband, Eric or with a special guest, so grab your shoes, open your app, pick a podcast and go for a walk! My recommendation?   6. Listen to Music: When taking a class, you have the option to select your favorite genre of music to listen to during that class to tailor your experience to your preferences! Just click the radio icon in the top right corner of the classes tab to select your music preference. Music stations include pop, country, and even throwback favorites. You can also grab a Spotify playlist made up especially for each month’s theme. Click here to access our Spotify playlists.

  7. Be Inspired: Added to the app each weekday under the Inspiration tab, you’ll find a new daily inspiration to encourage you and motivate you throughout your day. Here you’ll find tips, reminders of upcoming events and challenges, and plenty of useful information! 


The 99 Walks Community

  1. The 99 Walks Facebook Group: Be a part of the happiest ray of sunshine you’ll find anywhere online. Here our pack members share support, motivation, encouragement, and tips, as well as help each other celebrate victories. It’s a place where you’ll leave with a smile on your face and the inspiration you need to get moving and walk your way to better. Click here to join and get inspired!

  2. Team Messages: Because we believe walking with friends is the best way to create connection, our teams have the ability to send direct messages to their entire team or individual members within that team, as well as cheering each other by “liking” walks and messages by clicking a sneaker icon all within the app.

  3. Daily Inspirations: What’s going on each day at 99 Walks? Your Daily Inspiration will tell you all about our upcoming events, challenges, share some inspiration. Pack Members can find the inspiration in their app.

  4. Walk Your Way to Better Book: Our Pack Leader, Joyce, wrote Walk Your Way to Better as a tool to guide you on your walking journey. Each section of the book provides a thought-starter, insight or story. But, you don’t just read it. You read a section and then lace up your sneakers and head out the door. Because while walking, your brain processes in a unique way, enabling you to recognize the things that are truly holding your back and the changes you actually need to make. The 99 Walks Bracelet

We’re all about celebrating at 99 Walks, and that’s why our pack members who crush their walking goal each month will receive a stainless steel bracelet inscribed with our monthly theme as a reminder of all they accomplished. 

Bracelets start shipping on the 25th of each month. Once you hit your goal and see the confetti-congratulations screen on your app, you’ll also receive an email confirming you have hit your goal. At the same time, we receive a notification and start preparing your bracelet for shipping. 

Though we would love for you to receive your bracelet in a matter of days, sometimes the postal service is slow, which causes delays. If you haven’t received your bracelet by the 20th of the month that it was earned, feel free to email team@99walks.fit and let us know.

The 99 Walks Lexicon

We get it. Sometimes we talk a little funny around here, but here’s a little breakdown of what it all means.

  1. Bonus Miles: Hit your goal before the last day of the month? Awesome! But, don’t be tempted to change your goal. Just add on bonus miles!

  2. Pack Member: When you join 99 Walks, you become a pack member. You’re now a member of a community, a team, a pack — and we’re here to cheer you on!

  3. Blue Shoe: It’s kind of like a thumb’s up, but since we’re all about walking, we chose a shoe to represent our ways to cheer each other. So anytime you see that shoe icon, give it a click to send your “onwards” and “well dones” to a fellow pack member and watch it turn blue!

  4. Sunday Six: Sunday Sixes are our reminder that Sundays are great days to do a little bit more. Perhaps you will take six extra steps, tell six people you love them, send six thank you notes, or set six intentions for the coming week. Or maybe, just maybe, you will challenge yourself to six intentional miles. It’s your choice!

  5. Monthly Theme: We kind of love a theme around here and you’ll find that each month reflects something specific. Our team works hard to come up with just the right message to motivate our pack members throughout the month, and much of what you see from us each month will reflect that theme.

  6. Core Values: 99 Walks has a lot of core values. 99 of them to be exact. These are the things that we believe. The way we choose to live our lives. They are part principles and part sparks of inspiration. We created these as our guideposts. A place where we could turn when we need to be reminded of why we do what we do. You need a target, a goal, a North Star. Goal setting is an art. Set your goal too high and you set yourself up for disappointment. Set it too low and you’ll accomplish it too easily, which isn’t always a bad thing but means that you left something on the table and robbed yourself of the sense of accomplishment that comes from accomplishing something challenging.
